Atlanta Recovery Residences – Are You Willing To Continue The Fight?
The phone rings or whatever a phone does these days and since the number has an odd area code chances are it is another potential client wanting some information about our Atlanta Recover Solutions. The calls come daily now into our Atlanta based Sober Accountability Program. The stories unfold with errie similarities, filled with desperation and willingness at the surface but bubbling with the rawness of early sobriety and the chaos that comes with it.
Some young, some not so young, some hopeful, others going through yet another spin through the recovery routine. This disease knows no age or race or sex. It takes them all.
How Do You Get Willing?
Most potential clients present a sense of willingness and a hope of being accepted into our program but the reality is most will lose that willingness soon after they become comfortable in their new surroundings. A little time passes and the new routine becomes routine the willingness will become less willing sprinkled with some entitlement and selfishness and the old patterns will return.
We Need To Choose To Become Willing And Then Pray To Maintain It
The disease of addiction continues to amaze me and I think it amazes anyone who works with early recovery clients. There is so much possibility and at the same time so much despair. How does one get it, really get clean and sober and serene? We all want to know how but many don't want to put the effort and self analysis in necessary to make a change. We have all heard it said, "don't leave five minutes before the miracle". It's true but the miracle is never going to happen without work. You must put the work in and stick it out long enough to bring about change enough to position yourself on a new path.
What does it take to continue the fight? Where does the willingness come from? Why do some people have it and others do not? Why do some people get it and then lose it a short time later? If you are an addict you have probably experienced and pondered all of these questions.
I have said many times, "I wish I had a magic phrase that just motivated everyone to get fired up about their recovery or some way of making it happen for people like it happened for me, 9 years ago". It took me about 3 years before that 9 years to finally surrender so I have gone through the whole routine a couple of times. I am grateful to have reached a point where I was tired of drugs and alcohol running my life and conceded to the idea that I was not going to be able to control the problem and was indeed an alcoholic and drug addict.
I became willing to get in the middle of the twelve step program and stop hanging out on the edges. I didn't know if it was going to work for me but I saw it working for others and I certainly did not have time to try and look for an alternative program or plan to keep me from using.
Get Into The Middle Of The Twelve Step Program – Stop Hanging On The Fringes
Once I stopped hanging out on the fringes and opening up and getting honest with myself there started to be real change and before I knew it I wasn't obsessing anymore.
The change started when I really got honest with myself, that was the fight. I was fighting myself and didn't even know it. Are you fighting yourself? The only way you win this game is to concede to your inner most self and then you have the first step of recovery.
We have a great program here at The Arches and work hard at helping our clients get in the middle of their recovery and continue the fight.
