6 Steps That Can Change Your Life
Step 1: Pre-contemplation
At this point you haven’t haven’t yet decided to make a change. You know there are benefits to making the change in your life but you aren’t quite convinced the benefits outweigh the trouble of getting started.
This isn’t a step where you can just so, “just do it” there needs to be some assessment as to “WHY” you should do it.
Making a list can be a powerful tool to help you sort through the pros and cons in your mind. List all the reasons for wanting to make the change and then weigh these benefits against the consequences of not making the changes.
Step 2: Contemplation
Strategy: Figure Out What’s Blocking You
- Take an honest look: what’s really preventing you from getting started?
- Get committed. Promise yourself you’ll overcome those obstacles.
Step 3: Preparation
You’ve made a commitment and you’re planning to take action soon.
Strategy: Make Yourself a Plan
- Think through all the details
- Draw up a contract with yourself. Set three goals: one for the nextmonth, one for six months, and one for a year. Reward yourself for each goal accomplished. Set an initial goal you’re sure to attain; early success will propel you onward.
- Develop a detailed contingency plan.
Make a public commitment.
Step 4: Action
Now it’s time to “just do it.”

Step 5: Maintenance
Here you have seen some success, your life is changing and you are seeing results. It is easy to slide back so it will take effort to maintain the momentum you have made up to this point.
Step 6: Termination
You have now experienced the change in your life. It has become habit and a lifestyle. Continue to maintain the changes and reward yourself for an amazing transformation.
